Deciding to become a yoga teacher is an exciting life change but can also be a  little bit daunting. It could be something you’ve thought about doing for a while or something that you’ve decided to do on a whim.

There is a lot of information out there and it can be difficult to decide what classes or schools are best for you, or even if you’re ready to start teacher training and become a yoga instructor.

So, how do you know when you’re ready for a yoga teacher training program?

A Real Passion for Yoga

This goes without saying, but an obvious first sign that you’re ready for a yoga teacher training program is your passion for yoga. You’re ready to take your love for yoga to the next level.

You want to expand your knowledge and meet other like-minded people who can encourage and inspire you. You also want to share and help spread your love for yoga.

You Love Learning

Sometimes just mastering the yoga positions isn’t enough. You want to know more about the philosophy behind each move and the meaning behind each Sanskrit word.

Undergoing a yoga teacher program is a way for you to deepen your knowledge, even if you’re not sure if you want to teach yoga just yet. Practising yoga means embarking on a lifetime journey of learning.

Yoga Has Changed Your Life

Yoga has helped to change and improve your life and you want to give back and help other people fall in love with yoga the same way you have.

Teaching people the benefits of yoga and how it can heal both emotional and physical trauma can be incredibly fulfilling.

You’re Looking for a New Start

You’re over your 9-5 office job and want to start doing something more fulfilling with your life. Although you won’t be able to quit your day job straight away, knowing that you may have the opportunity to teach yoga full-time in the future is exciting.

You Want to Meet New People

You love meeting new people from all walks of life and are generally a ‘people person’. Having a friendly demeanour will help put your future students at ease and ensure that your students trust you and will get the most out of your yoga classes.

Think About What Makes You Unique

With more and more yoga classes popping up all over the place, it’s important to think about what will make you stand out from other yoga teachers. Are you good with children? Do you have a gift for working with disabled people?

You can use whatever sets you apart to make your classes unique and attract a diverse range of students, allowing people from all walks of life to have a chance to learn yoga.

You’re Not Afraid of Change or Commitment

Embarking on the journey to becoming a yoga teacher can be a commitment and a challenge. There will be financial and time commitments that you may have to sacrifice some things for, and there will be changes to your regular schedule. Make sure that you’re happy to commit to at least 350 hours of yoga teaching training.

You’re Prepared to Transform

Training to become a yoga teacher can be physically and emotionally demanding. You will undertake a journey of enlightenment that will reveal more of yourself and can make you vulnerable to the people around you.

Be Prepared to Do Research

Before beginning lessons, you will need to do research about the different class options available, including comparing prices, reviews, courses and the overall experience. Consider what you want to get out of this whole process.

Once you start lessons, you may also want to do extra research on yoga and being a yoga instructor, including reading books, watching documentaries and reading online articles.
